in many years and that was thanks to new tax revenue from proposition 30 as well as spending cuts. >>> oakland police investigating a shooting that seriously injured one man. it happened about 8:00 last night on crest avenue. neighbors say they heard about 30 rounds from what sounded likes an automatic assault rifle. the victim ran. he was taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition. so far no arrests have been made. >>> well, oakland's police chief and the mayor, they are working now to stop the surge in violence. 11 people were wounded in shootings over the weekend, six people have been killed so far this year. the police are blaming a lot of the violence on a feud between rival gangs. it started when a young woman was killed last summer. since then, howard jordan says gangs have been responsible for about 90% of the violent crime. >> we know that's probably 1%, 2% of the population causing this violence. we're focused on them. chief jordan says the police department is already getting help from the chp. he plans to have more police academies and also add 70 officers.

[laughter] >> we have an obligation to treat people with dignity and respect and they have an obligation to treat the police with dignity and respect. it works both ways. >> reporter: the plan includes more funding for the police academy to train more officers, hiring 20 police service technicians as well as 11 alameda county sheriff deputies. all of these proposals came from two council members in the wake of the shootings in just an eight-day stretch that left six people dead. the public safety commission

says the last straw was when the city council voted against putting a half cent sales tax measure on the ballot to help the police department's finances. moore said if he did not vo the -- have the support -- have the support from the city leaders, it was time for him to go. >>> dan oats is right now. police chief in aurora, colorado. this morning, his police department is investigating another deadly shooting. a woman was shot at an apartment complex. and that came after the aurora, colorado shooting. many movie patrons were at the theater during the mass shooting. the city of aurora handed out 2,000 tickets to survivors, first response -- first responders and the volunteers. the mayor of colorado says it shows the resilience of the community. >> there are major new developments in algeria, including some new video of some of the released hostages. >>> and what the u.s. military is reportedly doing. >>> and why a report says republicans have to change certain laws to make it easy for them to win. >>> told for some. cold for some. coast and bay will be really mild to warm. >>> kyl
